![]() ![]() During initial testing at the factory, any bad sectors are mapped to the spare sectors. The "extra" capacity is held aside to replace bad sectors, so the drives don't have to be perfect off the assembly line, and so that bad sectors can be re-mapped later during use to the spare sectors. ![]() The space that’s left is advertised as Gigabytes, netting you 111 Gibibyte in this example.īoth mechanical and solid state hard drives have raw capacity greater than their rated capacity. The manufacturer assembles an SSD that indeed uses a power of two number of flash cells (or a combination of such), though the controller does not make all that space visible to the operating system. While I certainly can’t state which exact algorithms need most of that extra space, the calculation stays the same. 128x 10^9 Bytes) versus the GibiByte value the operating system shows, which is-most of the time-a power of two, calculating to 119.2 Gibibyte in this example.Īs for as I know, this is something that comes on top of the things already explained above. It has been common practice to leave a bit of space unpartioned-on top of the space that has already been made invisible by the controller-when SSDs first hit the market, but the algorithms have gotten significantly better, so you shouldn’t need to do that anymore.ĮDIT: There have been some comments regarding the fact that this phenomenon has to be explained with the discrepancy between advertised space, stated in GigaBytes (e.g. The preserved space simply gives the controller/firmware room for stuff like TRIM, Garbage Collection and Wear Leveling. If you-for example-bought a 120GB drive, you can be pretty sure that it’s really 128GB internally. The 5.5th gen simply has a search function, a brighter screen, and a marginal improvement in battery life. While a lot of modern SSDs like the 840 EVO series do provide the sizes you’re used to like, the mentioned 256GB, manufacturers used to preserve a bit of storage for mechanisms fighting performance drops and defects. If you want the extra sdram, just go for a 60gb or 80gb 5th gen board and you'll have the 64MB of ram, which raises your limit to 30k~50k songs matching the 7th Gen.ītw, the 5th and 5.5th gen have the same DAC. Although I can also mod in an iPhone 7 battery or LG G4 battery for a proper, non-deceitful 1900mAh or 3000mAh capacity. I can toss in a 5th gen board into a 6th gen aluminum case for you, and then I can leave the case open for whatever storage/battery option you want. But if you're using DAC out, then you will make use of both the preamp and power amp stages of your fiio (not that there's any difference to you because again, you can't separate the two amp stages). Most of the time, a portable headphone amp is only needed as a power amp, and not for its preamp section (although you can't separate the two). Then feed that straight into your fiio and this would be the cleanest audio signal. However, if you do the iMod, then you can bypass the iPod amp altogether and get a DAC out signal. If you go through the line out on the 30 pin, you can only control volume through the fiio, but you get a cleaner signal coming from the iPod (preferred). So if you go through the headphone jack to your fiio, you have dual volume controls. "Amp B" is always set to line level and the scrolling volume function in the iPod is ignored, but amp B is superior in its lower noise floor to amp A. "Amp A", one of the two amps, has adjustable gain and it set to go to the headphone jack. most portable players (which probably apllies to the iPod but not confirmed), has one amp chip, but the amp has two sections and it's internally 2 amps. People seem really adamant that the 5.5 offers superior SQ to the 7th, so much so that its not worth getting the 7th, lol. ![]() But now I'm reconsidering getting the 5.5 again. I really like the size and slicker look of the 7th gen. I'm gonna put a 2000mah battery and iflash quad in it (hopefully keep the slim case). Part of my attraction to the 7th is the ability to access extra memory without using rockbox. I currently don't have plans to use rockbox or to use iMod. I don't have an ipod yet but im fairly confidence I'll be able to mod it. Using the line out of an ipod to an amp will increase sound quality but it wont increase sound volume, as in the volume doesnt function at all anymore? I can still adjust volume via the amp though, right? The headphones I've bought are low impedance so sound volume shouldnt be an issue, I'm using the amp for the bass boost function. Okay so to make sure I have this down, using the headphone jack into an amp will increase sound volume but not increase sound quality. ![]()
